The identity crisis

It all begun when Sugavan was about 6-7 years old. I remember his cousin walking up to him and saying "You look soooo like my friend". And I remember Sugavan brushing it off as a freak of nature.

Now....almost 20 years later, Sugavan looks back at the number of times he has heard "You look so familiar" or "Have I met you before?"

He just cannot keep count of it. Everytime he walks into Wal-mart or Target or any public place someone eyes him from a distance. Their eyes widen and random thoughts start flowing into their mind.

They aim for their prey and then....attack! Sugavan is through familiar territory again, trying to explain that he has heard those words from so many people and that it doesn't surprise him.

Sugavan is sometimes compared to a few celebrities too. He feels excited for a few seconds and then realizes that he is facing an identity crisis. He was once stopped at the Mumbai airport by a cop who kept staring at him and finally said "I thought that singer Shaan was here". I realize that it was probably Sugavan's long hair that would have caused them to think like that. He cut his hair short only to be compared to the Tamil actor Jeeva. He got sick and tired and started growing it again, and with the unkempt hair and stubble made his friends believe that he was Vivek Oberoi from Company!

He sometimes looks into the mirror to see if he is Chinese or something, because they are the ones that look like photocopies of one another...but no, its him, himself, a dark skinned Indian face. I reassure him that he definitely is of Indian origin.

He was once mistaken for a Hispanic and addressed to as "Jose". He still questions his mom about his origins...was he picked up from the streets?

He faces what I call....an identity crisis!
